What You’ll Need To Measure Your Window Accurately
You won’t need any special tools to measure your windows accurately. Just makes sure you have a measuring tape, a pencil, and a notebook to hand before you start the job.
Hints & Tips For Accurate Window Measurements
Okay, now you know the basics of measuring a window, how can you ensure you get it right the first time? Here are a few hints and tips for beginners:
- If you’re unable to open your window, measure the depth on each side of the glass and add these figures together. Then, you can add the thickness of the glass pane of your window. Typically, a single glass pane is around 4mm thick.
- List your measurements in the following order: Height x Width x Depth
- If your windowsill slopes at an angle, measure the width of your windows from the lowest point of the sill.
A Step-By-Step Window Replacement Guide
Measuring and recording the precise size of your windows should take between five and ten minutes if you take the following steps:
Step 1. Measure the width of the window frame
Measure the length of your frame horizontally at the top, middle, and bottom points of the outer side of your window. Your measurements should be recorded from the window jambs – you don’t need to consider trim pieces or parting beads. If your window is very tall, take as many measurements as possible to ensure accuracy.
Once you’ve recorded three or more measurements, circle the smallest number and use this when providing final measurements for your window suppliers and installers.
Step 2. Measure the height of the window frame
Next, measure the length of your frame vertically, starting with the left side and moving towards the right side. Take at least three measurements (more if you have a very wide window) and circle the smallest number again. You can ignore any trims, simply measuring the distance between one jamb and another.
Step 3. Measure the depth of your window
Finally, you should measure the depth of your window, running a measuring tape from the outside of your frame to the inside. Take several edge-to-edge measurements around the frame and, again, settle on the smallest measurement as your final figure.
